#TheBlindBlogger Sharing with special needs school kids

Hello again;

Recently I connected with an organization called Nepris.

They offer a free platform that connects school teachers with talented accomplished professionals from all over the country.

The goal being to allow these busy people to share knowledge, experience, and encouragement with students without having to interrupt their schedules to visit the school in person.

This also means that teachers and students have a much larger pool of talent to draw from because the meetings are all done virtually.

Last week, I did my first Nepris presentation.

You can watch it here.

I spoke to a group of special needs kids in a school in Chicago Illinois.

These were elementary school kids with a variety of learning disabilities.

Their school is making a concerted effort to get their students in all grades to focus on potential employment.

I want to thank their teacher Michele Lewis.

She made me feel very comfortable.

And I’ll admit to being more nervous about this talk than I was about the one I was scheduled to give later that day to the Mid-Atlantic Podcasters Conference.

But in the end I actually felt more satisfied and more sure of this talk than I felt about the later one.

And it must have went well, because she asked if I would be willing to speak to their junior high or high school students.

Of course, I said yes, and I’m looking forward to making that happen.

  1. Wow. That’s absolutely amazing and I’m sure those kids were extremely grateful to hear your story and actually see how you’re able to overcome your own disabilities. Great post 🙂

    • Hi Kyle; Thanks for the kind words. Considering their young ages, I’m not sure how much they got out of my talk. Their teacher was certainly impressed. But I think the person who learned the most was me. I realized that just like audience size the age of your listeners shouldn’t scare you. Just like there is no big or no small there only is. That line is courtesy of Star Wars. There is also no such thing as old or young. There only is. We may have to express ourselves with different words, but the story is still the same. And we all know our story better than anyone or anything else. Thanks, Max
