Michael Babcock interviews me on blab Continuing to push my comfort zone

Hello again;

I know its been a while since you have heard from me. I haven’t been posting new articles, recording new videos, or releasing my email newsletter. I won’t go into the reasons behind it, but let me just say I apologize.

I know that many of you find my work inspiring and depend on me to continue sharing my experiences to motivate you to keep going in your own lives. I have been struggling with a lack of energy, but I am starting to get it under control.

No, I don’t have any miracle drugs or new supplements you can take. I’m just doing what one of my doctors told me. He said Max when you feel like working, work your ass of. Then he said, when you don’t feel like working; then rest. Yep, its simple but most of the really good advice is.

So, on to today’s post. While I haven’t been creating my own content, I have continued to do interviews for podcast and radio shows and now for blab.

The links below are to an interview I did with Michael Babcock of yourownpay.com

I hope you enjoy it. It was one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve ever had. Thanks so much for asking me Michael.

A while back Michael told me he was starting to use some new live streaming platforms called perescope and blab. He said they were better than youtube because they were live and so much more interactive. He encouraged me to try them out.

I asked if they were strictly smart phone applications or if they had versions of their software for my laptop. He said well blab does but only if you use chrome for your browser. I only use safari on my mac as it is the most screen reader friendly. So, I put off trying either of these new networks.

Time went by and I continued to hear from m Michael about how interactive these new networks were especially blab. He challenged me to give it a try. He promised to interview me as part of a series he is doing spotlighting blind and visually impaired authors, business owners, athletes, advocates, etc.

So, I finally downloaded the blab app for my iphone this past week. I created an account and searched for some chats I might be interested in. I joined in a couple of those conversations and I was surprised by how easy it was.

I told Michael I was hooked and ready to schedule an interview. We got together last wednesday. He told me to expect it to last about a half hour and that he had a good assortment of what he thought would be unusual questions for me.

I settled in and prepared my mind. I thought well I’ve done dozens of interviews I doubt there are questions he can ask that I haven’t answered or don’t know the answers to. After all, its my life and my story. I should know all the answers. 🙂

Well, shortly after we started people started asking for permission to join the chat. You can have up to four people on at one time, and we had the limit for most of the length of the show. I met some awesome new people. We actually had a conversation covering a wide range of topics both blindness and business related.

I have done so many interviews. Many of them were recorded live with the host inviting people to call in with questions for their guest. It almost never happens. But on blab it does.

This leads to a more interactive experience that allows you to make new connections and really engage with the audience. I found it energizing even more so than how I usually feel after a standard interview. And the show ended up running an hour and a half. It only ended because Michael had another appointment he had to go to.

I don’t know if I will be doing anything on blab as a host, but its quickly becoming my favorite for interviews. And they do have a record feature, so you can post to youtube or to your podcast.

I want to thank Michael for so many reasons. First, he challenged me to try blab, and you all know how I love a good double dog dare. Its how my first book got started after all.

He had me on his show, and he is a great host and interviewer. He is also a fine ambassador for the blind and visually impaired community.

And not least of all he is a good friend who has learned from me and he has also inspired and motivated me. He is an energetic and imaginative online marketer who I strongly recommend you connect with. If you are a new or relatively new online business owner; then Michael has loads of great ideas. And if your business is not growing as fast as you hope it were, then he can help with that too.

I often find that someone outside the business can see opportunities that the owner can’t. And in my own life there have been several occasions when others saw possibilities for me long before I did.

Well, I am now a fan of blab and plan to use it more. I may do something on there. I quit doing hangouts on air because the technology was just too unreliable. And while there are sometimes audio glitches, it is no where near as bad as google was.

Once again, I have benefited by keeping my heart and mind open to new options and challenges. I love that I am at a point in my life where I can ask why not instead of saying no way.

Thanks so much for taking the time to watch, listen, or read my posts. I know you have lots of demands on your time, and I truly appreciate that you have decided to spend some of it on me. And if I can help you out, then please send me the link to your own projects.

  1. Hey Max,
Welcome back! Indeed many of us miss your contributions! I agree completely with your doctor – work your ass whenever you can and get the rest when necessary! A restful body is a re-invigorated body for work!

Its good to know about your video interview with Michael Babcock. Its amazing listening to some of the questions and the responses!

Although I couldn’t finish the watching the video due to technical reasons but I have grabbed the most important points and takeaways especially the parts you once again share your connecting story!
I left this post in kingged.com as well.

  2. Hey Max,

I was wondering where you’ve been. I haven’t listened to the interview yet, that 30 minutes went into well over an hour but glad you had a great time and I’m sure those people joining in was always fun.

I haven’t done the Blab platform yet, just haven’t had time to be honest with you but I too have had to drop Google Hangouts. Actually, it dropped me. All of a sudden it now won’t accept my mic set up that’s been in place since the inception of the hangouts. Nothing I can do about that and I’m certainly not going to purchase a new one just to please Google. Their loss that’s for sure.

I hope that maybe I’ll have some time this coming weekend with the holidays to listen in but just glad you had a wonderful time.

Take care of yourself and Happy Thanksgiving.

    • Hi Adrienne; Yes, I did have a good time doing the blab chat. And it is definitely google’s loss not having you doing hangouts. I got tired of being locked out of my own hangout. And their system is still not really screen reader friendly. I always felt a strain trying to hold a conversation while thinking about keeping the technical part of a hangout going. The blab platform seems to be really easy to use. I only put off trying it because there isn’t a laptop version. Well, there is but you have to use chrome on a mac. And I’m not big on installing a second browser for one app. I know you would listen to the whole show if time permitted and that’s what is important. I need to try my own blab conference. By the way I don’t know the names of all the participants. But we had a gulf war vet who lost his vision in the war and turned to body building; michael who is an online marketing guy; me my inspiring self; and the parent of a blind cycling star who is also active in boards of directors for blind sports associations. I was impressed. thanks for continuing to support me my friend. You have a happy thanksgiving too, max

  3. Wondered why you hadn’t posted in a while. This low energy thing keeps holding you back, doesn’t it? I recall you talking of it for quite a while.
Glad you discovered this new platform. You are right. I recently did my first online radio interview and you never expect it, or I wasn’t surprised at least, that there are no callers to those things, or rarely ever.
I haven’t heard of this one you used, but I have checked out Parascope a little.
It is possible to ask questions in a new and original way. Because you do tend, when you tell a story long enough, to sound familiar and a good interviewer knows how to keep the questions original
I was actually invited to my first Google hangout this wekend, but I’ve never tried it. We’ll see.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving with your family.

    • Hi Kerry; I enjoyed blab a lot. I haven’t tried periscope yet. I found blab to be very easy to use on my iPhone. I plan to try doing my own show soon. I miss not doing the google hangouts but they got to be too much trouble. I kept getting dropped off and then locked out of my own show. Yes the longer you tell a story the better you get at it. I’m sure you were great on that radio show and I would love to hear it. Please send me the link. I’ll start forwarding you links to shows that aren’t good fits for me. There are many who are only seeking women. 🙂 And yes this lack of energy thing is still bothering me. I have started taking a b complex and am considering ginseng. I have replaced a lot of my coffee with white or green tea. And I’m doing my best to get good sleep and rest. Thanks for being a good friend and worrying about me. Take care now, max

  4. I listened and loved everything you and Michael and that father talked about. He knows Eric. Maybe there is a connection somewhere that can be made.
I am using Google Hangouts again this Friday. A group of bloggers and writers I am connected with meet on there on Friday nights as a group and have a chat. It’s not perfect, but it was okay.
Thanks for the mention of that interview I did in our newsletter. Appreciate the shoutout.
I understand about chronic fatigue. I have that all the time and have had to adapt to it, along with chronic pain. Are you in pain too? I hope not. Fatigue is enough to handle.
    Take care and Happy Holidays.

    • hi kerry; so good to hear you liked the show. and i especially love how you called the email list ours. That is exactly the way I want it to feel. I want my followers to feel like they are part of a community. Am glad you are doing the hangouts. I stopped doing them because I got tired of getting locked out of my own meeting. 🙂 I’m thinnking of trying again with blab. I don’t have pain just fatigue. but it keeps me from doing as much as I would like when I would like. Its bad enough being blind and having to be patient about getting help to accomplish certain tasks. Its even worse when your body is telling you to wait too. thanks for the comment and take care. <3 max
